It has been over 15 years since YouTube was launched and a lot of things have changed over the years. Now would be a good time to refresh your knowledge on the tips and tricks that YouTube has got to offer.
YouTube has over a billion users — almost one-third of all people on the Internet — and everyday people watch hundreds of millions of hours on YouTube and generate billions of views.
Adjust YouTube Playback Rate to any speed
YouTube’s video player allows you to adjust the playback speed in the range of 0.25x – 2x speed. But what if you want to go higher or lower? Interestingly, you can set any custom playback speed with this neat little trick by Amit @labnol.
Open your browser console with the shortcut Ctrl + Shift +J and paste the following line of code. You can set the value to any number between 0.0625 and 16.
Switch region easily to find trending videos
Sometimes you may be interested in checking out the trending videos of other countries and you can do so by switching your location in the settings. But there is an easier and temporary way if you are interested. Simply append the country code as a query parameter to the URL.
|Korea (the Republic of) 🇰🇷
If you are wondering how you can get these country codes, refer to this IBAN page listing all the alpha-2 country codes.

Can we all agree that we never go back to see our old YouTube comments unless someone replied to it and the YouTube notification squad alerted us? But chances are that you also didn’t know you could see all your comments and now you do. Visit the link below to see all your comments on YouTube and trust me it’s fun to go through our old ones.
Bypass YouTube ad or watch video anonymously without incognito mode
Originally reported in the following reddit thread, this trick claims to bypass YouTube ads and lets you watch videos without adding them to your YouTube history.
Copy the video URL, add a dot (.) right after .com and visit the URL. You will be watching the video without actually signed in!
For example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kt4iMM2OigY becomes https://www.youtube.com./watch?v=Kt4iMM2OigY (Notice the extra dot after .com)
Or you can also visit youtube.com. directly to open YouTube anonymously.
Note: By anonymous, I mean that your watch history is not added to your Google account but the URLs you visit will be present in the browser history.
Go mad with color changing YouTube progress bar!
Perhaps this is the last remaining YouTube easter egg effects from the many that used to exist earlier. Open a video and type “awesome”; you can see the progress bar with changing colors.
Watch age-restricted videos
With millions of videos on YouTube, the content restrictions are getting stricter. YouTube used to annoy me with their age check when I wanted to watch the new game trailer that was out and that’s when I discovered this simple trick on the internet. To bypass the Youtube age restriction check, all you have to do is replace ‘watch?v=’ with ’embed/’ in the video URL and hit enter.
Toggle Picture-in-Picture Mode in any browser
Picture in Picture is an absolutely useful feature and something which I use quite often. But having to move the mouse to the PiP icon is not fast enough for keyboard people! Thankfully there is a shortcut for the same. Press ‘i’ and voila – the video is now in PiP!
Share part of the video
Youtube has built-in sharing options to share the video URL with your friends, but none of them allows you to share only a part of the video. With this trick, you can share a part of the video by specifying the start time and end time in seconds as URL parameters. For start time alone, you can use the ‘&t=4m3s’ parameter where 4 and 3 represent minute and second respectively. For videos greater than 1 hour long, you can use the format “&t=1h3m2s”. See the following URL syntax for better understanding.
//starts from 1 hour 34 min 2s
// starts from 2 min 2 s
// starts from 2min and ends at 3min
The &end parameter works only when used with embed url and the time must be specified in seconds
This youtube trick is really helpful for webmasters to embed only a part of the video. You can use our free youtube embed code generator tool to embed part of the video.
Convert YouTube videos to gif image
This isn’t really a YouTube trick but it really is excellent! You can quickly convert YouTube videos to gif images and share them with your friends. All you have to do is add the word ‘gif’ before ‘youtube.com’ when watching a video. So the new URL would be like https://www.gifyoutube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID
Download the entire YouTube video or part of it
There are several free youtube downloader software that let you save youtube videos to your PC but none of them works great. With this trick, you can easily download videos to your computer without any external software. All you have to do is type ‘ss’ before ‘youtube.com’ when watching a video. So the final URL would be like this – https://www.ssyoutube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID. This youtube trick works even for VEVO videos. But a more popular and better site for downloading videos is clipconverter.cc . The site lets you save part of the video or convert them to a bunch of formats right before downloading them!
Change the color of the caption background
Do you use youtube’s subtitle feature? If so, then you will definitely like this tip. Turn on the captions and press ‘B’ to change the background color of the YouTube subtitle.
If you want more control of youtube subtitles then visit youtube in TV mode ( i.e youtube.com/leanback ). Now you will have more controls over caption styling such as font, color, style, size, background, etc. Navigate YouTube only with keyboard using TV mode Leaning back with hands on the keyboard? Go to youtube.com/leanback to enable TV mode. You can then control youtube with just your keyboard. When TV mode is enabled youtube instant feature is also enabled i.e you get search results as you type them. With Youtube’s TV mode, you can remote control youtube with no extra apps. Youtube Easter Eggs Google’s is good at making pranks. They did the same with youtube. Make youtube do a Harlem shake by typing in “do the Harlem shake” in the search box. Similarly search for “doge meme” for a colorful youtube experience. “webdriver torso” is another popular youtube easter egg. If you know something cool, leave it in the comments.
